In case of car trouble: turn on your 4-way flashers, lock all doors, roll up windows, display a "Call Police" sign and wait inside the vehicle for the police.

Do a circle check of your vehicle before entering. Check for damage, flat tires, items placed under tires, etc. (Do not perform circle check if parked underground).

Putting the front seat forward before exiting may indicate if someone is or has been in the vehicle.

Walk to your vehicle quickly and with key in hand, especially if parked underground.

Ask a friend to escort you to your car if you feel uncomfortable walking there alone.

Park in well-lit areas with pedestrian traffic.

If you have been in an accident in an area where you don't feel comfortable, go to the nearest police station, well-lit public area or store to call for help.

Upon leaving your vehicle, lock all windows and doors and pocket the keys.

If you feel your vehicle is being followed, do NOT drive home. Instead, drive to the nearest police station.

If traveling, map out your route and inform someone of your expected time of arrival. Check in with that person once you have reached your destination.

Make sure your vehicle is well-maintained and mechanically fit, free of breakdowns.

If traveling alone a great deal, obtain a cellular phone for extra protection and emergencies.

If lost while driving, go to a service station or store to check maps or ask for directions. Don't Stop on the side of the road and set yourself up to be a target.
