Vehicle Safety & Protection

Tips

  • Do NOT pick up hitchhikers.
  • Lock the doors when you are in your vehicle.
  • In case of car trouble: turn on your 4-way flashers, lock all doors, roll up windows, display a "Call Police" sign and wait inside the vehicle for the police.
  • Do a circle check of your vehicle before entering. Check for damage, flat tires, items placed under tires, etc. (Do not perform circle check if parked underground).
  • Putting the front seat forward before exiting may indicate if someone is or has been in the vehicle.
  • Walk to your vehicle quickly and with key in hand, especially if parked underground.
  • Ask a friend to escort you to your car if you feel uncomfortable walking there alone.
  • Park in well-lit areas with pedestrian traffic.
  • If you have been in an accident in an area where you don't feel comfortable, go to the nearest police station, well-lit public area or store to call for help.
  • Upon leaving your vehicle, lock all windows and doors and pocket the keys.
  • If you feel your vehicle is being followed, do NOT drive home. Instead, drive to the nearest police station.
  • If traveling, map out your route and inform someone of your expected time of arrival. Check in with that person once you have reached your destination.
  • Make sure your vehicle is well-maintained and mechanically fit, free of breakdowns.
  • If traveling alone a great deal, obtain a cellular phone for extra protection and emergencies.
  • If lost while driving, go to a service station or store to check maps or ask for directions. Don't Stop on the side of the road and set yourself up to be a target.
