Hamilton Police Service Mounted Patrol Unit

Visible and Viable

The implementation of the Mounted Patrol Unit by the Hamilton Police Service was approved by the Police Services Board in September 2009.  In addition to planning and preparing the logistics of a new unit, basic training was required for both horse and rider.  Fortunately, nearby Toronto Police Service offered to accommodate our training needs.  Following basic training, regular weekly work outs have been ongoing in order to maintain skills and manage risks.

Currently, the Mounted Patrol Unit consists of four horses and six Officers.  The mandate of this unit is to complement existing policing strategies in the City of Hamilton.  The MPU also works closely with the Police Services’ new Action Team to respond to areas identified by hotspot analysis that require focused proactive patrol.

The priorities of the Mounted Patrol Unit are to heighten the Service’s ability to accomplish:

·         crime prevention

·         manage entertainment districts

·         conduct search and rescue

·         provide park and trail safety

·         promote community outreach while positively impacting local tourism.

The Mounted Patrol Unit is a three-year pilot project that will be assessed annually.  The assessment will include among other tools, a community survey.  The survey will be completed in consultation with researchers from Nipissing University.
