Victim Services

How we assist.

No one expects to become a victim of crime.  Ontario law defines a victim as a "person who as a result of the commission of  a crime by another, suffers emotional or physical harm".

The Hamilton Police Service understands that whether you have been physically hurt, threatened, survived a tragedy, suffered a traumatic loss or witnessed a traumatic event, you may be a victim and we may be able to assist you.

We can assist by:

  • Providing emotional support and crisis counseling
  • Decreasing the sense of isolation
  • Giving them the opportunity to vent and have their feelings validated and normalized
  • Giving them a shoulder to lean on
  • Providing information to assist them in any decisions they may have to make
  • Providing them with a sense of empowerment over the situation
  • Alleviating their fear
  • Providing clear information regarding compensation procedures
  • Providing resources and community referrals
