Traffic Safety
Police Stops
The Hamilton Police Service stops an average of 180 vehicles per day in the City. Most vehicle stops are routine and are generally initiated due to officers observing minor traffic offences. However some stops can be dangerous and consideration must be given to the location, number of vehicle occupants and weather conditions at the time of the stop.
What to do
-
When you see the red emergency lights of a police cruiser, pull to the right and stop as safely and quickly as you can.
-
Turn down the volume on your radio or stereo and lower your window.
-
Remain in your vehicle and keep your hands visible if possible.
-
The officer will approach, introduce themselves and explain the reason for the stop.
-
Be prepared to produce your Drivers Licence, Ownership and Insurance.
-
Follow the officer’s instructions and ask for identification from the officer if you have any doubt that the officer is authentic.
