Street Safety and Awareness
- Avoid dark and deserted areas.
- Wear comfortable, stable footwear which you can run in, if you have to.
- When walking, be alert. Look people in the eye and walk with confidence.
- Walk near the sidewalk curb, away from hiding spots such as buildings, entranceways, alleys and shrubs.
- Wear a knapsack or fanny pack, or carry your purse with the strap running diagonally across your body and the bag tucked under your arm.
- If a threatening vehicle approaches you, turn and walk in the opposite direction. It's more difficult for a driver to pursue you if he or she must drive in reverse, or turn the car around.
- Never carry large amounts of money and never count it in public.
- Arrange a system so people know where you are, and when you expect to return home.
- If you think you are being followed, go to the nearest well-lit public place or populated area.
- Avoid walking or jogging ALONE at night. If you must do so, wear light-coloured clothing and carry a personal security alarm or whistle.
- Yelling or sounding an alarm may be necessary to attract attention if you are in danger. It is normal to feel uncomfortable "making a scene," but your safety is important. Give yourself permission to be loud if you feel you are in danger.
- Don't feel pressured to speak with strangers, especially if they make you feel uncomfortable. You don't have to talk to anyone just because they talk to you - trust your instincts!
