Personal Safety and Protection
Personal safety is a matter of common sense. There is not a foolproof style of living to recommend that may reduce the risk of your becoming a victim. There are practical measures that you can do to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
There are three elements for crime to exist:
- The criminal (cannot control);
- The victim (cannot control);
- The opportunity (can control or reduce).
We recommend a four-point plan as follows:
- Target Hardening:
Avoid being selected, tough targets are not selected; criminals may be stronger, but not smarter; criminals are creatures of opportunity; they will steal a car, purse, or break into a house; trust your instincts - when you think something is wrong - it probably is.
- Denying Privacy:
Go towards light and away from darkness, go towards people. Denying privacy also means managing private places you cannot deny.
- Attracting Attention:
Call "HELP" or "FIRE", bad guys don't want to be caught- scream for help. If you see someone else in trouble - yell, honk your horn, and yell you are going to call the police - it can stop a crime.
- Taking Action:
Initial contact between attacker and victim - attacker has least control. Action must be immediate and fast. Don't hesitate!
Remember
- Crime can happen to anyone.
- Bad guys don't look like bad guys.
- Everyone is responsible for his or her own personal safety -Have a Plan!
- Look tough.
- Walk with a purpose.
- Keep valuables out of sight.
