Two Hamilton police officers arrested

In June 2012, Hamilton Police were conducting a criminal investigation.  During this investigation, they became aware of possible misconduct involving a Hamilton police officer.

Hamilton Police immediately launched an investigation.  This investigation revealed that on an application for a search warrant, information is alleged to have been falsified.  A Hamilton Police Gangs and Weapons Enforcement Unit officer has been arrested and charged:

Charged:           Robert Hansen, 38 years

Charges:           Fabricating Evidence

During the course of this extensive investigation, further evidence was developed.  It is alleged that an officer disclosed confidential information to an unauthorized person.  It is also alleged that the officer obstructed justice.  A Hamilton Police Gangs and Weapons Officer has been arrested and charged:

Charged:           Craig Ruthowsky, 38 years

Charges:           Breach of Trust

                        Obstruct Justice

The officers have been released on a Promise to Appear and are to appear in court on December 20, 2012.

Both officers have been suspended from duty, with pay, since June 2012.  Police Services Act charges are anticipated.  D/Cst. Hansen is a 12 year member of Hamilton Police and D/Cst. Ruthowsky is a 14 year member.

As this matter is now before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the charged officers and the community, the Hamilton Police Service will make no further comment pertaining to this investigation.
