Q. Is my age a factor?
A. The Ontario Human Rights Code states that a person may apply if they are between the ages of 18-60 years of age. The Hamilton Police Service assesses applicants on their knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and maturity. Each person matures at their own pace and this maturity must be demonstrated during the process to allow the candidate to proceed.
Q. Where can I obtain an application?
A. You can obtain an application online, or by picking one up in person at our Human Resource office located at 155 King William St Hamilton Ontario.
If neither of these options is available to you, we will mail out an application on request.
Q. Will I automatically get an interview?
A. There is no guarantee that you will receive an interview. There is a selection process that everyone must go through. If you make it through the various initial steps of the selection process you will then receive an interview.
Q. When should I apply?
A. Once you have received your OACP Certificate it then becomes a personal choice. You should ask yourself: Am I mentally and physically able to do the job? Do I meet all the minimal requirements? If you can answer yes, you are ready to apply.

Q. Can I apply to a specialty unit?
A. All candidates must apply as a constable and spend time doing general patrol prior to applying for a career development opportunity. The length of time is dependant upon which area you are interested in. Career development opportunities are available after a three-year period.
Q. How long does it take to get hired?
A. The hiring process can take anywhere from 3 months to a year. Each applicant is unique and the length of time is dependent upon a variety of factors, an average background check takes approximately 40 hrs. If you have traveled or studied abroad, that time will increase.
Q. What kind of training is involved?
A. All recruits must attend and live at the Ontario Police College (OPC) located in Aylmer, Ontario. The training consists of a 12-week program Monday to Friday, where you will learn such things as police vehicle operations, defensive tactics, powers of arrest federal and provincial laws.
Q. What courses should I take?
A. If you are in High School, the Ontario Government recommends English, French, Computers, Social Studies, (Psychology, Law, Sciences, 3rd Language). For more information visit www.hrdc.gc.ca/career. If you are in post secondary education, there are no specific courses required.
Q. What can I do to better improve my chances of being hired?
A. The four areas the Hamilton Police Service screens for are:
- Demonstrated commitment to continued education and self-development, specifically in the last two years;
- Commitment to your community through a history of volunteering,
- Stability in work and/or education; and
- Attention to detail in all paperwork.
If you do not meet these requirements and are planning on volunteering or taking a course, we ask that you have been volunteering for approximately six months first and have completed the course prior to applying.

Q. Will my military experience help?
A. Applicants are looked at individually as to what skills they bring with them. Military service is neither an advantage nor a disadvantage.
Q. Do I get paid while I am training?
A. Yes. Once you are hired you automatically become a member of the Service with all its entitlements such as pay, benefits and shortly thereafter, vacation time.
