Q. I applied to your Service 6 months ago, and haven't heard anything. Should I re-apply?
A. No. We keep applications in our active files for one year, from the date we received them. During that time, your application may be brought forward for consideration for positions indicated on your application. You only need to submit a new application after the one-year time period has elapsed. Only those applicants under consideration will be contacted.
Q. When will I be called for an interview?
A. Our Service recruits Civilians for our part-time/temporary pools, on 2 - 3 separate occasions during the year. There is no defined time period for this recruitment as we recruit based on the needs of our Service. Civilian candidates must pass all applicable testing for the position(s) applied for, prior to being called for an interview. Only successful applicants may be called for an interview.
Q. I want to work for your Service, but I don't want to work shifts. Can I still apply?
A. Everyone is welcome to submit an application for employment to our Service. However, we recruit candidates based on their availability to work shift work. Since Police Officers work 24 hours/day, every day, we require administrative staff to assist them while they are working. This includes 8 to 12 hour rotating shifts on statutory holidays, and evening/weekend work.
Q. Do I have to wear a uniform?
A. Depending on the position you are hired for, you may be required to wear a uniform. Administrative staff is required to wear business attire. Special Constables and Summons Servers are required to wear uniforms which are supplied by the Service.
Q. Are there any summer student employment opportunities?
A. Due to budgetary constraints, the only summer student employment we participate in is the Cyclemania Program, sponsored by the Hamilton Safety Council. A student can apply through the:
Summer Jobs Service - Youth Employment Centre
67 Victoria Ave. S., Hamilton, Ontario, L8N 2S8,
telephone #(905) 521-9032 or (905) 522-4902.
Fax (905) 521-05514
e-mail: yec@execulink.com
These placements commence in the beginning of May with interviews being held several weeks prior to this.
Q. I currently work for another police service in Ontario / Canada; can I get a direct transfer to Hamilton as a Special Constable, Communications Operator, etc?
A. No, you must make application to the Service and go through the hiring process the same as any new applicant.
Q. Will I be hired full-time?
A. Depending on the job posting, most external Civilian candidates start as part-time/temporary with our Service. Once hired, members can then compete for internal full-time postings as they occur. Only candidates who have specialized qualifications for advertised external vacancies are hired on a permanent full-time basis.
Q. I currently have a full-time job, but would also like to work for your Service on a part-time basis. Is this possible?
A. No. According to the Police Services Act, a person cannot hold a full-time position outside of their employment with a Police Service. However, it is possible to maintain part-time employment outside of our service, assuming there is no conflict of interest between these positions.
Q. I have a criminal record. Can I still be hired?
A. All applicants are required to undergo an intensive background investigation before an offer of employment is made. These files are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and decisions are made accordingly. If you do have a criminal record, you may consider making application for a pardon. This can be done through a lawyer or through our Records office at Central Station for an initial fee of approximately $40.
Q. How would I go about doing a Co-op placement with the Service?
A. Hamilton Police Service has a partnership with the Hamilton-Wentworth and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Boards. Twice a year job descriptions are sent to these school boards. Interested students can apply for the various placements. Students are then short-listed by the Board and our Service. Successful students must pass a security clearance. Co-op placements are from September to January and February to June. Please contact the Co-op teacher at your school for further information.
Q. Are part-time employees entitled to medical/dental benefits?
A. No. These benefits are only available to full-time members of our Service. However, part time and temporary staff are entitled to 14% in lieu of benefits and 4% vacation pay for each hour worked.
Q. Are part-time members entitled to join the Police Association?
A. Yes. Part-time members are required to become a member of our Police Association upon hire and will be required to pay association dues.
