Q. What are the mandatory requirements to be an Auxiliary Constable?
A. The mandatory requirements to be an Auxiliary Constable are:
- Be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position
- Be prepared to take an Oath / Affirmation of Office and Secrecy
- Be of good moral character
- Successfully complete the Hamilton Police Service application process
Q. How much training do I receive, where and when?
A. Each successful applicant will receive a minimum of 2hrs/week of classroom training for 11 weeks. Also there will be mandatory Use of Force training as well as training in drill and marching.
Q. Can I become a Police Officer after being an Auxiliary Constable?
A. Yes, you must apply to become a Police Officer the same as any other new applicant.
Q. Where do I obtain an application to become an Auxiliary Constable?
A. Pick up an application form at our Central Station, 155 King William St, 1st floor Traffic Office, or Auxiliary Coordinators Office. Fill out your application form and drop it off at any of our stations.
Q. What duties will I perform?
A. Some duties include:
- Assisting the Marine Unit
- Traffic Control
- General Patrol
- Crowd Control
- Community-based policing
- Crime prevention initiatives
Q. What are the steps involved and the process to become an Auxiliary Constable?
A. The steps and process to become an Auxiliary Constable are:
- Fill out and send in your application.
- When openings occur, your application goes to a screening committee.
- If your application passes the screening successfully, a security/intelligence check is conducted by Records.
- After this you will receive an interview before a selection panel.
- If the interview is successful, HR will perform a detailed background check on you.
- If you are successful, a position is offered and training will begin.
Q. What are the yearly requirements and how much time do I have to put in?
A. You must put in a minimum of 144 hours of volunteer service yearly. Also it is mandatory that you attend 75% of the monthly meetings.
Q. Do I get paid?
A. No, it is voluntary.
Q. Do I carry a gun?
A. No you do not.
