Sherwood Centre Problem Oriented Policing Project (POP) 2007

Officers in Charge:  PC Matukaitis and PC Lejeune

The parking lot for the Sherwood Centre Plaza has been an area for congregation and socializing by various groups for some time. Many individuals have been respectful of the law regarding trespassing, unlawful liquor consumption, drug use, driving and noise. In so doing they also respect the rights of many residential neighbours.

Unfortunately, there are too many groups, and individuals, who enjoy using this area for drinking, drug use, street racing and generally loud disorderly behaviour that disturbs businesses, customers and residents in the area. The officers of Division Three take these concerns very seriously and focus efforts on managing and eliminating this behaviour each year as the warmer weather arrives. This was the focus of a Problem Oriented Policing Project (POP) implemented by patrol officers Matukaitis and Lejeune this year.

This years P.O.P project for “Sherwood Centre” has proven to be very effective.  Plans were implemented for “Trespass to Property” signs and speed bump installation.  The property manager has notified us that removable speed bumps will be installed in the spring, and signs related to “Trespass to Property Act” have been erected.

We have made consistent effort, throughout the P.O.P project, to monitor this property, by creating a special attention, and working along side the Crime Manager’s, Sgt. MASON, and Sgt. VANDERPOL.  There has been a significant reduction in the number of calls for service in relation to previous years.  Residents in the area seem to be satisfied by Police efforts in keeping order in the parking lot that borders their residences.

Although speed bumps are to be installed in the parking lot this coming spring, this will not likely deter youth from loitering.  Continued periodic patrols will be required in order to keep this problem under control, and maintain the satisfaction of area residents.

We would like to thank all front line officers who assisted with regular patrols in the area.  Also the assistance of the Crime Managers Office was invaluable.  The Property Manager’s continuous co-operation was much appreciated, and essential in attaining our goals for this project.  Special thanks to P.C. Jaime MOORE who assisted with previous reports of problems in the area, and issues dealt with in the past.
