Project BERT is being led by one of our Crime Managers and is comprised of officers seconded from uniform patrol, the HEAT unit and Criminal Investigation Branch. The project goal is to reduce the number of residential break and enters occurring within Division 3. To accomplish this goal the project objectives are to analyze current break and enter trends to identify target areas and active criminals. The project also seeks to monitor and arrest active criminals related to break and enters in our division.
Project BERT operated from January 14-February 15, 2007. The Project Team reached its goal and reduced the number of residential break and enters in Division 3. The Team was also successful in meeting its objectives by identifying, locating and arresting numerous individuals responsible for break and enters, property-related crimes and executed several outstanding warrants.
Residential break and enters were noticed to decline over the course of the project and these results can be attributed to the 36 arrests made and the many targeted offenders apprehended.
Break and enter rates across Division 3 continue to remain low and it is felt that the offenders, who were incarcerated by the Project Team, were responsible for many of the reported property-related crimes throughout the Division.
The Project Team acted on Intelligence information that was forwarded to us by many frontline officers. This flow of two-way communication and intelligence-sharing was very successful, both internally and with our external partners at Probation and Parole Services, along with many members of the Provincial R.O.P.E. Unit.
