The Neighbourhood Safety Project allows for flexibility and innovation when dealing with Division 2 concerns. One major concern is Road Safety.

We believe that Road Safety in Division 2 can be improved by targeted enforcement on the worst intersections. The top 10 intersections have 22% of the collisions in the Division. By concentrating the efforts of Divisional Safety Officers and Patrol Officers on the problem areas we know the collision rates will be reduced. Fewer collisions will reduce deaths, personal injuries and property damage.

A small number of intersections generate the most collisions. Under the Hamilton Police Service Business Plan we are encouraged “…to identify and implement innovative strategies to decrease aggressive driving (and)… to reduce motor vehicle collisions.”

In the Neighbourhood Safety Project we are in an excellent position to follow this direction. Effective and efficient use of our resources, with targeted enforcement on our worst intersections, have reduce collisions and improved Road Safety.

Over the past three years we targeted the top ten high collision intersections listed above. The collision rates and the number injuries fell by an average of 46%.

We know that if we stay with this approach that road safety can continue to improve. The rash of recent traffic fatalities is of great concern. In Division 2 we have worked with the whole Police Service to respond to number of pedestrian traffic deaths. We will continue to target our worst collision intersections in 2007. We all want to reduce collisions and injuries for everyone. Look for officers in these areas as they enforce to the benefit of all.
